Major App Stores Agree to Improve Privacy Policy Standards

App stores under the likes of Apple, Google, Microsoft, HP, RIM, and Amazon will soon be adding new privacy policy standards in light of a deal struck with California’s Attorney General.

The new policies implemented will require any software that uses personal information to provide a privacy policy, as well as links to the relevant documents in an obvious and consistent location, that can be viewed in the store before the app has been downloaded.

The California Online Privacy Protection Act requires developers to provide such a policy, so the agreement will bring the respective stores in line with the expectations outlined in the act.

The companies will also need to provide a simple way for users to report developers that violate the rules.

In your opinion, are the changes to the privacy policy rules making safer app stores for everyone, or are these companies just going to be adding more paperwork that no one will read?
