At 10AM CEST (4AM EST), Airbus’ newest member of the A3XX family, the A350, took off on it’s maiden voyage. The new passenger plane is designed to compete with Airbus’ rival Boeing and their new 787 series. The A350 took off from Toulouse-Blagnac International Airport for the first four-hour test flight in the test flight series expected to amount to over 2,500 test flight hours high above Europe. This test flight is also the first test flight that Airbus has conducted since the first flight of the well-known Airbus A380 double-decker airliner in 2005.

Airbus is banking quite a lot on this new plane, which is a twin-engine airplane constructed from composite structures with titanium, aluminum alloys, and carbon fiber, all of which build up to create a highly fuel-efficient aircraft. The new aircraft is most closely related to the Airbus A330 and A340, and the Boeing 777 and most notably, the 787. The A350′s operating costs are supposedly 8% lower than the Boeing 787, which has had major battery issues since it’s launch.

Airbus will be in attendance at the Paris Air Show next week to try to rack up some more orders from airlines to add to the 613 orders from over 35 customers that they already have. The A350 will continue in flight testing for 12 months, and if all goes according to plan, will finally enter service with launch customer Qatar Airways at the end of 2014.

WWDC has come and gone in 2013, but in its wake lie a handful of new hardware goodies from Apple. The Mac Pro was completely overhauled, abandoning any trace of its previous design, while the Macbook Air took on some significant internal upgrades. Here’s everything that you need to know:

Mac Pro

The Mac Pro received the most drastic update, taking on an entirely new look. The new design centers around what really and truly looks like a kitchen appliance, but don’t let that fool you; inside, it’s packing more heat than ever. The new AMD graphics processors are putting out up to 7 teraflops of power and can support Thunderbolt 2 and 4K displays. New additions also included Intel’s new E5 Xeon processor family, with up to 12 total cores. Did we mention that PCI Express now supports around 40 gigabytes…per second?

All of this is packed inside a new, cylindrical case with one single fan keeping everything nice and cool in the center. While the new design excites some, others are skeptical, crying foul on Apple for taking away the opportunity to customize the beastly machines as they’ve always done. However, it’s worth noting that the RAM is still easily accessed and swapped out. That’s customization, right?

Macbook Air

The latest iteration of Apple’s flagship ultrabook, the Macbook Air, wastes no time in jumping on board with Intel’s new Haswell ULT processor. With this comes claims of dramatic battery improvement: the 11-inch model should coast along for 9 hours with no problem, and the 13-inch model should be able to keep the lights on for a whopping 13 hours. That’s longer than our Managing Editor’s beloved Chromebook- a fact that he is painfully aware of.

With the Haswell chips also comes a performance boost in the graphics department. While it still can’t compete with machines that use a dedicated GPU, users should see a 40% increase in graphics speed. Although the theory has not been tested, we definitely feel that the Air now probably has better graphics than a Mac Pro.

That was actually our best attempt at humor; we’re geeks, not comedians.

Airport Extreme & Time Capsule

Why did these get taller? Raise your hand if you want a tall, stark white router sitting on your desk. Nobody? Yeah…

Anyways, the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule devices were both upgraded at WWDC, receiving the latest Wifi 802.11ac technology. With this, Apple claims that users could see around 1.3Gbps of throughput. That’s pretty much all that changed, unless you count the bizarre growth spurt (we don’t).

The Time Capsule was, of course, included in these updates, and it’s now got a 4×4 inch footprint and an amusing 6 inches of height. Why Apple decided to build with height is still up for debate, but does size really matter?

iOS 7 has been one of the most rumoured, yet best kept secrets, since the outing of Scott Forstall and Sir Jony Ive replacing him...

iOS 7 has been one of the most rumoured, yet best kept secrets, since the outing of Scott Forstall and Sir Jony Ive replacing him as the head of design for all Apple products, including hardware and software. Yesterday at the WWDC keynote, Apple announced an array of new products, however the standout was iOS 7, which has a completely new look and feel and a bunch of new features.

Sir Ive goes for a much flatter, less bevelled design

iOS has been around since 2007 at the inception of the iPhone, and since then, not much has changed. Yes, yes, I know, a few features have been added, and the UI has changed a little bit, but there really hasn’t been any drastic changes to the software… until now. It’s no secret that even the most loyal Apple fanboys and fangirls were getting a little antsy with how stale iOS has been over the past many years. Now that Ive has the helm of the iOS, he’s gone for quite the redesign, but he left the very basic roots of iOS. However, he has gone for a design with a much flatter and modern look, with a complimentary color palette that is much brighter, a welcomed change.

There are a lot of changes that you’ll notice as your scroll around the new UI. Things like thinner font choices, a new lockscreen unlock function, and new translucent panels that adapt to the environment that your phone is in. Touch gestures have also expanded in iOS 7 with an emphasis being placed on things such as swiping and pinching. You can also tilt your device, and that tilting changes the positioning of items on the screen. Another small, yet incredibly large, change is that folders now have an unlimited amount of apps that you can put in them, a far cry from the previous version of iOS which limits you to just 16 apps.

New multitasking similar to webOS’ ‘cards’

Users have been asking for this for years, and Ive is now delivering. Instead of just having a list of four icons per page, when y0u double tap your home button, you’ll be greeted with large icons and a thumbnail of the current window in the app, and you can scroll through your apps. Apple has also said that all apps will offer this new multitasking in iOS 7, so in theory you shouldn’t have to worry too much about waiting that seemingly endless amount of time between each app switch.

Notification Center cleans up

All I can say is that it’s about effing time. Notification Center really hasn’t changed a drop since it was announced several years ago, and it’s been crying out to Scott Forstall, but now that Ive is in charge, he’s finally giving it a long-needed makeover. Now, iOS 7 allows you to access Notification Center directly from the home screen. One thing that I’ve been asking for for years is the ability to clear your notifications from all devices at one time, something that iOS 7 is now going to bring me. The new Notification Center also features three tabs with “Today,” “All,” and “Missed.” The most noticeable of the three is the “Today” tab that shows you what’s coming up today with events from your calendar, the weather near you, birthday notifications (if connected through Facebook; and nope, they’re not gone in iOS 7. Joy.), selected stock prices, etc. When you pull Notification Center down, you’ll also notice that it’s quite translucent and essentially just blurs out what is happening on your screen underneath the Notification Center pull down. It also features the new design aesthetics featured throughout iOS 7.

Control Center

Something surprisingly simple, but it makes a lot of sense, and will probably be a feature that most iOS users will use on a regular basis. Now, you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen from anywhere in iOS, and you will find a panel of quick toggles that give the user quick access to commonly used settings (airplane mode, WiFi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, and rotation lock). You are also going to be able to adjust your brightness, manage your music (volume, play/pause, skip, etc.), and you are going to be able to connect to AirPlay or the new-to-iOS AirDrop.

Similar to Notification Center, it has a translucent appearance, and it features the same Helvetica Neue light text, with smooth black outlines, and the overall clean, modern look.

A smarter Siri

For the first time since Siri was announced, she’s getting a makeover. For starters, she (or even now he) has a brand new voice! Now users can choose between a male or female voice, both of which are extremely smooth, and much more natural-sounding then the original and current Siri voice. There are only a handful of languages supported right now with unique voices for each language. Another addition is the expansion of Siri’s data sources. Now, users have the ability to find information through Wikipedia, Twitter, or straight from an online search through a partnership with Bing. While Bing is still currently the only supported search engine, more search engines may be added later.

Apple joins the streaming music race with iTunes Radio

This is one of the worst kept secrets in Apple history (well, after the iPhone 4 lost in a bar, of course). Apple has officially announced iTunes Radio, a free service (supported by ads) available to all iOS 7 users through the Music app. You can also get iTunes Radio on your computer through the next version of iTunes. You can remove the ads from the streaming if you are an iTunes Match subscriber, but otherwise expect at least a moderate amount of audio ads.

iTunes Radio is a little different from traditional radio apps in that it’s essentially full-length samples for you to buy the song on iTunes. While this is definitely expected, there has been no word on if there is a limit on skips, but if it follows any similar pattern to services like Pandora, you will only be able to listen to so many songs per hour per channel.

Now, Apple is very late to the music streaming game, but it looks like iTunes Radio is going to be a fierce contender since it will be built right into every iOS users’ devices.

iOS for cars

I now want a new car. In what I feel is one of the coolest features of iOS 7, Apple and a variety of auto manufacturers are expanding their vehicular presence. Now, with “iOS in the Car,” you will be able to essentially mirror your iPhone on a screen on your dashboard of your car. You will be able to get directions, take phone calls, send text messages, use Siri, and more. Currently, Honda, Mercedes, Nissan, Ferrari, Chevrolet, Infiniti, Kia, Hyundai, Volvo, Opel-Vauxhall and Jaguar-Land Rover are the auto manufacturers signed on to adding the new system, and they will begin manufacturing capable cars next year in 2014.

Ever since senior VP and software lead Scott Forstall departed Apple, Sir Jony Ive has undertaken a “thorough” redesign of iOS for the latest launch...

Ever since senior VP and software lead Scott Forstall departed Apple, Sir Jony Ive has undertaken a “thorough” redesign of iOS for the latest launch of iOS, iOS 7. Rumors have been swirling since Ive took on the project, and most rumors have said that he is focusing on a flat design to fall into unison with his other designs. This new design would remove most if not all of the skeuomorphic aspects that have been added to various places around the OS over the years. 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman has been tipped off to a few of new features and design elements that are reportedly being implemented into iOS 7.

Ive is apparently going to be removing the “mismatched heavy textures” found around iOS, and will instead implement a unified color scheme that focuses on black-and-white tones, but each app will have its own unique color combination within the app itself. From the looks of things, Mail, Maps, Game Center, Notes, etc. will be the apps most affected by these changes. However, although he has “made his mark on every corner of the operating system,” no need to worry as he is still making iOS familiar to even the longest of users.

Gurman was able to provide a few specific examples of where the UI will be changed. For starters, the lock screen will move away from the glossy, reflective, and gradient design and move instead towards a black interface, with a flat design, but the experience itself shouldn’t change too much. Another major area of upgrade will be in Notification Center where the linen background is reportedly being replaced by a dark gray color scheme with white text. You will most likely also be able to use a few new widgets to help enhance the functionality of the Notification Center past the Weather and Stocks widgets currently available to iOS users.

WWDC is in just under two weeks, so we will see for sure what Sir Ive has in store for us in iOS 7, so stay tuned to TRG for all the latest news about iOS 7.

We’ve known that Acer was developing an 8″ Windows 8 tablet to release to the market soon for a while, then we got some leaked images last month, and now the tablet has had a brief stint on the Amazon marketplace that provided us with some fresh new details before the listing was hastily removed. Amazon listed the tablet as Acer’s W3-810, and they were selling it with a price tag of $379.99. Inside the device, they said that you will find a dual-core 1.8GHz Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, and an 8.1″ 1280 x 800 display.

We also found out through Amazon that it will feature 32GB of onboard storage, a rather meager 2MP rear-facing camera (and a 2MP front-facing camera), one microUSB 2.0 port, and a micro-HDMI port. According to the listing, the tablet weighs right at 1.1lbs and has a battery life of up to 8 hours.

Now, of course these are only rumors until Acer officially comes out and announces the tablet, but with the leaked images last month, and this now-removed Amazon listing, we’re guessing it won’t be too long now until we have an official announcement.

For the first time since the entire Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet was grounded in January due to incidents involving a defect in the lithium-ion batteries on the planes, the Dreamliner has lifted back off into the skies. Ethiopian Airlines operated flight 801, which took off from Addis Ababa at 9:45 a.m. local, Ethiopian time and arrived at Nairobi, Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 12:38 p.m., and experienced no issue with the battery system. Currently, the 787 used in the flight is one of the four that Ethiopian Airlines currently operates, and it is the first and currently only aircraft that has been fitted with the new, modified battery system that the FAA approved last week. Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam made a statement that the battery system is currently being installed on the airline’s other three currently dormant Dreamliners, and that they should too be taking to the skies soon.

Ethiopian Airlines isn’t the only airline getting their Dreamliners up into the air, as Japanese-based ANA (who was actually the first airline to receive a 787 and currently has the world’s largest 787 fleet with Other companies are also working on bringing their 787s back to the skies: Japanese airline ANA, which has the largest fleet of 787s in the world with 17 in operation), will conduct a flight test tomorrow and reinstate the Dreamliners to everyday service as soon as possible. American-based United Airlines also is getting their jets up into the air as they have flights scheduled onboard Boeing’s new flagship beginning on May 31st.

The race to be the first American cell service to carry the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone has been on, and AT&T made strides today by telling early pre-order customers will be receiving their devices as soon as April 25th, and telling the general public that the S4 will be available for purchase on April 27th.

AT&T tweeted earlier today that the carrier will be making the 16GB model available to purchase in their retail stores (no word yet on availability for their online store) this coming Saturday, April 27th. The 27th is also the same day that Sprint will begin offering the Galaxy S4 as an option for customers to buy. The S4 will also go on sale on T-Mobile starting May 1st, and then you have Verizon who still has a “sign me up for updates” page up and hasn’t announced any kind of specific dates except for a rather generic “coming soon.”

Here is what AT&T’s @ATT Twitter account tweeted today announcing the earlier availability date:

Starting 4/27, #Samsung Galaxy S4 16GB available in our stores.soc.att.com/XRVqUv #GalaxyS4 twitter.com/ATT/status/326…

Twitter has released its well-rumored #Music app to public users today, after testing the experience among celebrity musicians like NeYo and Jason Mraz. Oh, and non-musician celebrities, like Ryan Seacrest. What’s he famous for, anyways?

Regardless of the celebrity beta testers’ variable contributions to the music industry, you can now get your paws on the app. But what does it do, exactly?

Aside from the obvious– helping you find trending popular tracks on Twitter– it also helps you discover up-and-coming artists from the industry. By linking your Spotify or Rdio account to the app, #Music can generate suggestions of new music for you to take a listen to based on your playlists. Also included? A constant stream of what your fellow followers are listening to or tweeting about…meaning that if you’re a closeted male Spice Girls fan in your mid-40′s…you might want to steer clear.

Twitter #Music is available for iOS today, with an Android version of the app expected to release soon.

Download #Music for iOS!

T-Mobile has revealed the launch date of the greatly-anticipated HTC One via Twitter today, in reply to a fellow tweeter’s query. The handset, which is rumored to feature Wi-Fi calling, will join T-Mobile’s lengthy list of LTE phones, including the iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, and Blackberry Z10 (But let’s be real, nobody’s buying a Blackberry).

The HTC One will be offered on T-Mobile’s contract-free plans and their traditional plans for an upfront cost of $99 plus monthly fees.

That’s the story, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Journal, which has declined to reveal its informants, claims that Microsoft has placed orders for parts matching those that would be included in a smart watch-esque device of its own, and if the reports are true, Microsoft too will join the increasingly long list of tech giants hopping onto the smart watch bandwagon.

However, this isn’t Microsoft’s first crack at the smart watch market. In 2004, before the likes of Apple and Google had begun their rumored watch prototypes, Microsoft began developing a device codenamed “Spot.” The Spot, which used FM radio signals (Come on, it was 2004, not the Stone Age…) to send IM’s, weather forecasts, and other pertinent information by paid subscription held on for dear life until production ceased in 2008. Just last year, Microsoft scrapped the project entirely.

This news comes after a particularly depressing fiscal quarter for the PC industry, which suffered the steepest decline in computing history– approximately 13.9%.

Thus far, Microsoft has declined to comment on allegations regarding smart watch development. Follow The Real Geeks for updates!
